Dual-threat volleyball players are hard to come by because of the usual height difference between players of various positions. Ohio freshman Mallory Salis, who is listed as 5-foot-8, is one of the Bobcats’ most versatile players, having found her niche playing both outside hitter and libero.

MACtion: Bobcats prep for start of conference play

Before the season began, Akron coach Terry Bowden noted that the Mid-American Conference brings the total package in terms of what it can provide to a player — with bowl trips, high draft picks and nationally televised games increasing the conference’s visibility. When Ohio coach Neil Macmillan learned this summer that the renovation of Pruitt Field would keep the Bobcats from using their home pitch, he said he needed somewhere to practice that was “flat — like a tennis court.”
