Preparing for Mari: Athens adjusting to recreational marijuana sales

Ohioans voted to legalize recreational marijuana last November, but it wasn’t until this August that dispensaries were allowed to sell the substance to recreational users. While it has been legal to possess and consume marijuana since Issue 2’s passage, the Athens community has been preparing for the start of recreational sales throughout the summer.

Ohio authorized recreational marijuana sales last week with strict regulations from state, local and institutional levels. With students returning to Ohio University’s campus in less than a week, Athens will see an influx of people from across the country with access to the substance.

Athens plastic bag ban faces legal challenge

An Athens City ordinance, which took effect on Jan. 1, prohibits local businesses within Athens City limits from providing single-use plastic bags. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office filed a lawsuit against the city on Dec. 27, 2023, arguing that the ban was unconstitutional under the Ohio Revised Code and demanding enforcement be stopped.
