Letter: Arrests reflect Quaker culture

On Feb. 1, eight local citizens were arrested during a protest at the K&H Partners injection well site on U.S. 50 near Coolville. The Athens Friends Meeting (Quaker) would like to acknowledge both the disciplined behavior of the 150 demonstrators and the respect and professional manner of local law officers in making the arrests (according to a Feb. 3 article in The Post).

Editorial: 'Social host' rule wouldn't prevent underage drinking

Graduate Student Senate President Joel Newby announced last week that local law enforcement officials are considering asking Athens City Council to enact a “social host” ordinance. Basically, that would permit law enforcement to arrest a person of legal drinking age who “negligently” allows an underage person to have or consume alcohol at his or her home.

Letter: CIT a bigger perk for team than for fans

Isolated as I am down here in the alternative universe known as Florida, the news from Athens arrives only sporadically. Thus, I just recently read of Coach Jim Christian’s lament about the general perception of the Bobcats’ men’s basketball team’s post-season berth in the CIT (Collegeinsider.com Tournament). Yes, dear reader, I sense your question even from this distance: “What in the world is the CIT?” From the article in question I have learned what it is not: it is not the NCAA, not the NIT and not the CBI. Coach Christian, much to his credit, defends his players from “the snark, cynicism and sarcasm during this time of the year — by media, pundits and fans.” (That is, just about everybody except the Athletic Kingdom.)

Potential 'social host' ordinance is in its infancy

Graduate Student Senate President Joel Newby told Student Senate last week that local law enforcement had been discussing the potential of a “social host” ordinance, but both Athens and Ohio University officials have said there is no written proposal — and there might never be one.

Gamer Girl: Trio of new games defines 'addictive'

If you’ve seen me the past week or so, I’ve been a sight for sore eyes — dark circles, a coffee inevitably in my hand and yawns escaping my mouth constantly. Sure, I’ve had a lot of homework, but there has been something else keeping me up until the wee hours of the morning.
