Nowstalgia

Nowstalgia: Scary movie classics still haunt us

It seems as if every week, a new horror movie appears in theatres (i.e. Paranormal Activities 1, 2, 3, 4, whatever; The Purge, Insidious, The Haunting in Connecticut, etc.) Demons, loud noises and sub-par acting. How spooky. In the spirit of October and Halloween, I will suggest a few eerie and genuinely frightening movies for the haunting season.

Women's Golf: Bobcats finish out of top 10 in shortened play

The rain that has swept  through Athens this week also found its way to the TPC River’s Bend golf course in Maineville, Ohio. The course was hosting the Bearcat Classic, an event that was supposed to be 54 holes; but, due to non-stop rain, competition was cut down to the one round of 18 holes played Monday. The field was only a few holes away from completing the second round of play when the rain continued to fall and the tournament was cancelled. The rain-soaked conditions caused the Bobcats to finish outside of the top 10 for the first time in two tournaments. After finishing first in their last tournament, the Bobcats were unable to keep the momentum going and they combined for a one-round score of 319, which was 31 strokes from par. Ohio finished in 12th out of a field of 16, but was just five strokes away from the three-way tie for eighth. Junior Angela Codian led the Bobcats with a one-round total of 75 for three strokes over par, which was good enough to land her in a tie for seventh place individually. Codian has now had at least one round of 76 or lower in six straight tournaments and has been in the top 10 individually for two straight events. Junior Lauren McKinzie had her best result of the season, carding a one-round total of 80, which was eight strokes above par to place her 35th individually. Sophomore Hailey Hrynewich finished close behind her teammate after shooting a one-round total of 81 — four-strokes above par and good enough for a tie for 47th. The Bobcats will head to Catawba Island next week for the 2014 Rocket Classic, hosted by Toledo. Codian will look to continue her success as during last year’s Rocket Classic, the then sophomore finished in eighth place, which was her fifth top-10 finish of the year. The Rocket Classic will also mark the end of the Bobcat’s fall season. The team has had three top-10 team finishes out of their five events played so far. The 2014 Rocket Classic and season finale tees off Monday. @PaulHolden33ph553412@ohio.edu

New campus food venues up convenience at Ohio University

When it comes time for food, being on the edges of campus might mean you have to work off your lunch before you even begin eating. With the addition of two new venues, Ohio University Culinary Services hopes to change that. The Steam Station Cafe and McCracken’s Fresh Take are both pilot programs offering food to those who can’t get to the central campus quickly.“It’s the perfect place to grab your morning coffee, a quick meal at lunch or a mid-afternoon snack," said Kent Scott, associate director of auxiliaries operations, in a news release.Steam Station Cafe is located in the West Union Street Office Center and has been open for a little over a week. McCracken’s fresh take is located in the lobby of the building and opened at the beginning of the school year.To provide these new venues, Culinary Services spent a combined $44,000 from its operating budget, $11,000 to implement McCracken’s Fresh Take, and $33,000 for the Steam Station Cafe.To help run the two venues, 15 student workers were hired, but this number may vary based on operational needs, said Patti Barnes, director of Auxiliaries Support Services.Students and faculty are excited for the new options.“It would be nice if I was running home from class, I go down Jeff Hill because I live in River Park, that I could just run into McCracken, grab a soup and take it home,” said Alexa Rae Kitko, a senior studying biological sciences.Renee Middleton, dean of the Patton College of Education, expressed a need for a venue within McCracken.Barnes said this was the reason McCracken’s Fresh Take was started.Since the beginning of the school year, McCracken’s Fresh Take has made a little over $2,964.
