Between the Lines: Don't let life's best moments slip away

Over the break, I had the opportunity to travel to Fairbanks, Alaska. In September, my boyfriend moved there for a job, and I hadn’t seen him since then, so I knew it would be an exciting trip regardless of the actual destination.

College Matt-ers: A report card for OU administration

In just a couple of weeks, Fall Semester will come to a close and students will receive their grades for the term, so it’s only fair to also dole out grades for the administration and the Board of Trustees.

Between The Lines: Karate teaches discipline, not ninja skills

I have been studying Isshinryu Karate for nine years now, most recently receiving my Nidan Rank (second degree black belt) from Marcum’s Martial Arts Academy in Kent, Ohio. But despite the profound effects it has had on my life, I rarely if ever bring it up, knowing all too well that it will elicit ignorant responses such as, “Could you kill someone with your bare hands?” or “Do you have a license to kill?”

Science with Dan: Behavior during finals can affect well-being

In the next few weeks, the semester will be brought to an end. Our culmination of knowledge, or lack thereof, will be tested and these results may have a significant impact on our futures. I, for one, try to stay as calm, cool and collected as I can. Others fret and cause themselves to lose sleep because of the worry associated with failing. In previous semesters, I have witnessed students take what I can only guess would amount to years off their lives due to the stress that finals carry with them as well as the unhealthy practices that many employ into their studying regimens.

The PHILosopher: Every party must eventually come to an end

Animal House, for those of you who are unaware of the epic movie based on a fictitious fraternity in the ’70s, is the moniker we decided to name our house this school year. I bear a striking resemblance to John Belushi (who played John Blutarsky in the movie) and our goal for the school year was to rock the block as many times as possible. We accomplished that within the first weekend.

Green Beat: Another take on recent Nelsonville quake

In last week’s column, I noted that some estimates for the recent earthquake in Athens County indicated it originated too deep in the Earth’s crust for human activities to have been a factor. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the depth was 7.9 km, and this was the figure cited in the Nov. 21 article in The Post. So far, the story adds up.

The PHILosopher: How to survive during time away from Athens

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday; it allows you to literally eat yourself into a food coma and not have any regrets because it’s the holidays. Turkey, pumpkin pie and the sacred stuffing will be within your grasp shortly after reading this installment of the PHILosopher.

Post Column: Vegetarianism, veganism have pros and cons

Hardly a day goes by that I don’t find myself rolling my eyes, scoffing at a few of my friends in regard to a lifestyle choice of theirs that I cannot wrap my head around. Now I am not a bigot, and I am not going to simply cast judgment on someone for how they want to live their lives. However, when someone begins talking my ear off about the lack of vegetarian and vegan options at the dining hall, I kind of want to immediately begin vomiting.

That's a Wrap: Viewers need to embrace the classics

Today, many people do not watch older movies because of the relatively poor cinematography and writing, but those people are definitely missing out. The greatest movies, and the ones with the most historical significance, were not all made recently. In the world database of movies there are many different movies and genres to explore.

Green Beat: 'Green guy' goes 0-3 in quake cause

I was in Baker Center when the floor started shaking and felt more bemused than startled afterward. How peculiar! Baker doesn’t do much shaking generally, so I assumed a piece of construction equipment or a large truck must have hit the building. This was not completely out of left field, as I heard the beeping sound of a truck backing up a few seconds later. People were wondering what had happened, and I offered my guess without too much conviction. Then, I looked out the window to see if I could see anything. Nope, nothing. So, I shrugged.

Gamer Girl: Smartphone games are incredibly addicting

I’m completely addicted to playing games on my phone. It’s a horrible habit — it kills my battery, distracts me in class and makes me stay up late trying to beat levels. I can’t help it, I’m obsessed.

The PHILosopher: Reminiscing proves a worthwhile investment

Apparently this Monday, and the bulk majority of Sunday, my mind felt like it would be a good idea to reflect on my college experience from my new senior perspective. Upon first review, this idea seemed to be about as fun as going into a midterm still tipsy from the night before. I figured that once my mind entered this splendid train of thought my social media profiles would be as much as of a train wreck as Miley Cyrus was during the MTV Video Music Awards.
