What’s shakin’ with bacon: this week’s biggest headlines about everyone’s favorite breakfast meat

Bacon is the quintessential breakfast meat. It improves any meal and any day. Thick or thin, sweet or salty, greasy or dry, bacon is popular. Not only is bacon delicious, it is also topical. Take a look at some news surrounding bacon.

1. Nestle is making “Benevolent Bacon

On Sept. 7, Nestle announced it's buying a company called Sweet Earth, which makes plant-based alternatives to meat. Along with “Harmless Ham,” the company will make fake bacon, so even non meat-eaters can enjoy the essence of bacon.

2. Bacon is getting more expensive.

Bacon is in higher demand, and people are buying less and less of the frozen stuff, according to WNYT.com. The prices are reaching about $10 per pack now. Still worth it though.

3. Baconfest happened over the weekend.

A town called Lathrop in California hosted Baconfest on Sept. 9-10, in which participants competed in a bacon eating challenge and ate a bunch of bacon dishes. Jeff Mauro, a Food Network star and creator of the show Sandwich King, hosted the event.

4. Iowa shipped bacon to Japan.

Speaking of bacon festivals, Iowa also holds an annual festival celebrating bacon and has sent 20 percent of its own bacon to Kofu, Japan, so they can have their own bacon festival. The transportation of bacon from Iowa to Japan is called the Hog Lift, according to Radio Iowa. The party is happening Nov. 3, plenty of time to book a plane ticket to Japan.

5. Customers sued fast food chains over bacon.

In Michigan, some customers, a Jewish woman and a Muslim couple, have sued Denny’s and KFC over accidentally putting bacon in their food, according to Newsweek. Totally not kosher.
