Public has opportunity to buy university vehicles

Today, Ohio University will sponsor its first surplus-auto auction at a university-owned building, 751 W. Union St., across the street from the Verizon Telephone building. About 80 cars, vans and trucks will be auctioned off to the public.

OU officials decided to have the auction as part of a university-wide effort to cut costs around campus, said George Mauzy, media specialist.

"By selling these vehicles, the university will save money on insurance and maintenance costs," he said.

All vehicles were donated to the auction by various university departments, in particular facilities management, Mauzy said.

Mauzy said Gary Dicken, OU director of property management and moving services, organized the event, which will begin at 9 a.m. and last until all or most of the cars are sold. Cars that are not sold during the surplus-auto auction today again will be auctioned off Saturday at one of OU's quarterly surplus auctions, where other items are sold.

A list of vehicles being sold can be found on OU's surplus-auction Web site, http://www.facilities.ohiou.edu/cgi-bin/surplus.cgi?view=public.
