Preparing for Mari: Athens adjusting to recreational marijuana sales
Ohio began allowing dispensaries to sell recreational marijuana in August, after Issue 2 passed in November. While possession and consumption became legal 30 days after the ordinance was passed, sales only started in August. The City of Athens has adapted to the new legislation by implementing a cannabis ordinance, which requires dispensaries to be “500 feet from schools and other public spaces.” Because Ohio University receives federal funding, the campus remains smoke-free, including cannabis, due to its requirement to follow the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.
