It’s time for TikTok to move over as the sole short video-based social media platform. The creator of since-retired Vine, the app that kicked off short video social media in 2012, have unveiled a new version of Vine called “Byte.”
Byte users can upload videos that are up to six seconds long, either from the app or from pre-existing videos. As of late, follower counts are hidden, and user profiles cannot be shared, but it seems the goal of Byte is very much like TikTok or Vine: a means of going viral. Users can “Re-Byte” the videos they find and want to share, much like a retweet.
Byte is currently available in over 40 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Russia, Taiwan, Japan and parts of Europe. Notably, it is not available in China, the country where TikTok is headquartered, and is known for their heavy regulations as to not have anything on the app that may speak ill of the Chinese government.
