City Council: Members to discuss the city’s transient guest tax

Athens City Council members will discuss the city’s transient guest tax at their meeting Monday night, including reallocating revenues between the city and county.

The tax, which is charged to Athens guests staying in hotels and bed and breakfasts, is 6 percent of the costs associated with the hotel, Athens City Council President Chris Knisely said.

Knisely said the city shares a portion of the tax with Athens County, and the portion that the city collects is split between various government entities within the city.

Council members will also discuss lighting upgrades and replacements around East State Street. The city is accepting bids for the construction of another project on East State, which will include narrower lanes and bike lanes, according to a previous Post report.

The Ohio Department of Transportation could pay for at least part of the improvements, according to the agenda for the meeting.

Additionally, council members will begin the city’s budgeting process by establishing a timeline for the formation and passing of the city’s 2018 budget.
