The Athens City Planning Commission voted 3-1 last Friday to approve plans for a new apartment complex on Richland Ave.
PRS Construction company is planning to build the Campus Edge apartment complex across the street from the University Courtyard apartments on property owned by Ralph Daines. The plans call for a 21-building complex with about 900 bedrooms a clubhouse, tennis courts, volleyball court, sidewalks within the complex, bike, motorcycle and car parking and a small amount of visitor parking, said Peg Cohn, a member of the planning commission.
Plans for the complex still need to be approved by Athens City Council and the commission's approval is pending on the construction company working out a deal with Ohio University and approval from the city engineer for storm water drainage, Cohn said.
In order to build the complex, the company needs to move a large amount of dirt to flatten the land for building. Cohn said John Kotowski, OU's assistant vice president for facilities planning, said a deal was 85 percent complete.
