Nelsonville building donated to local school

Nelsonville-York City Schools gained a new piece of property at last night's school board meeting.

Board members voted to accept the donation of a building and its property from Lancaster Sales Company. The building, located at Fourth and Canal streets in Nelsonville, likely will be used as a type of community center, Superintendent Ted Bayat said.

The building's roof is in good condition and donations to help with the heating and air conditioning already have been offered, said board member Gary Edwards.

(The building) will be a minor

if any expense to the school he said.

The Lancaster Sales Company previously had tried to sell the building for about $400,000.

Board members also voted to renew the school's contract with South Eastern Ohio Voluntary Education Cooperative for the 2003-04 school year. SEOVEC provides basic technological services and software support for the school, Treasurer Sandi Hurd said.

In addition, board members approved a trip to Toronto for the high school choir. The students will hold fundraisers to lower the cost of the trip to about $300 per student, Bayet said.

A list of 104 elementary school volunteers who will aid teachers in the classroom was also approved. The large number of volunteers is a positive sign for the community, Bayet said.

Also, a student committee meeting will be Monday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. to discuss the grade policy and changes to cafeteria procedures.
