Athens County Interim Replacement Sheriff Rodney Smith sent a news release to local media Tuesday recommending driving tips local high school students and parents should keep in mind during prom season.
Aside from basic knowledge such as wearing a seatbelt and not allowing an intoxicated person to drive, drivers should be defensive on the roads, as prom night tends to bring a lot of distracted drivers to the road.
In addition, students and parents must remember, Smith said, that tired drivers are dangerous as well, and should not be behind the wheel. Also, a pair of spare comfortable shoes for driving are important, so that no one has to hit the brakes while wearing bulky dress shoes or high heels.
Parents should make sure they know where their child is going to be during the dance and at after parties, and they also should make sure there aren’t too many people driving to or from the event in one vehicle.
On that note, parents should consider hiring a limo or adult driver to chauffeur students.
