The Bobcats started off the weekend Saturday night with another Mid-American Conference matchup against Buffalo (1-8. 1-1 MAC)
At 157 pounds, No. 29-ranked redshirt freshman Sparty Chino gave the Bobcats a spark as he attained the first of two pins on the night, defeating the Bulls’ Wally Maziarz
No. 17-ranked Cody Walters grappled with John Martin-Cannon, who is just a spot ahead of Walters in the nation at 175 pounds. He was down 4-3 until late in the last period when he performed a clutch takedown for his 26th win on the year.
Just two matches later, redshirt freshman Phil Wellington manhandled his matchup against sophomore Jeff Palmeri of Buffalo at 197-pounds. He won in a major decision, giving Ohio a commanding 20-10 lead. The Bobcats took the match 26-13.
On Sunday afternoon in The Convo, the Bobcats took on Michigan State in a non-conference matchup on Ohio’s senior day.
After dropping two straight matches to start the day, freshman Joe Munos won his match at 133 pounds. He was behind for most of the match, but late in the last period he pulled off a 5-point swing including a reversal, giving him his second win during the weekend.
At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Harrison Hightower blanked Nick Proctor in a major decision. After being down 7-0 and 16-6 at different points earlier in the match, Hightower’s win brought Ohio (6-5, 3-2 MAC) within reach at 16-10.
Walters had another tough matchup on Sunday afternoon. But just like the night before, he capitalized on a hard fought match. He won a 2-0 decision at 174 pound to improve his overall record to 27-2.
Redshirt junior Ryan Garringer pinned No. 18-ranked John Rizqallah, and gave the Bobcats the lead at 19-16.
Wellington closed out the match by defeating the Spartans’ Luke Jones 7-4.
Coach Joel Greenlee said this weekend is exactly what the team needed after two losses away from home last weekend.
“I think this weekend shows that we’re doing the right things, we’ve gotten a lot better in a week, and we’re going in the right direction moving forward,” he said.
