Higher costs prompt hike in rental-permit fees

Starting April 16 landlords in Athens will have something more to worry about in addition to finding renters, paying property taxes and managing their properties.

The city adopted an ordinance March 17 that will raise rental permit fees for the remainder of 2003 and again in 2004, said Steve Pierson, Athens City Code Enforcement director. Rental property comprises 71 percent of the housing in Athens.

Athens City Councilman Edward Baum, R-at-large, said the permit fees were raised because costs and salaries have gone up at Code Enforcement, and the code fees must support three-fourths of the costs. Baum introduced the ordinance at council in February.
