‘Sakamoto Days’ deserves all its praise

Netflix’s “Sakamoto Days” is the animated adaptation of the 21-volume, as of March 2025, shonen battle manga created by Yuto Suzuki. With the closing of part one, fans of the series anticipate the release of part two.

Fans can expect the 12-episode continuation of the series to appear in their recommended section on Netflix sometime in July. The quick turnaround of the comedy action has many fans excited. Some fans even compare it to anime royalty like “One Punch Man.”

Overall, “Sakamoto Days” is turning out to be a must-watch.

“Sakamoto Days” follows Taro Sakamoto, a retired hitman who was once at the top of his field. Sakamoto navigates protecting his family from those who wish to harm him for leaving his old life.

However, he must now defend his family while following the “Sakamoto Family Rule Book,” which includes a no-killing rule. Sakamoto picks up strays along his journey, where viewers see fierce battles, wholesome moments and beloved characters joining the Sakamoto family.

Unique skills and abilities, combined with distinct backgrounds, make each character feel like an individual who is uneasily forgotten. Each character is brought to life with expert precision by their voice actor.

“Sakamoto Days” includes a star-studded English cast of veteran voice actors and newer actors who are breaking into the industry. The two acting groups work together to create a project that feels like home.

Matthew Mercer, who has previously voiced Hermes (Blood of Zeus), Orthax and Dr. Dranzel (The Legend of Vox Machina) and Levi (Attack on Titan), voices Taro Sakamoto. Dallas Liu plays the second main protagonist, Shin Asakara. Liu is known for his role as Zuko in the 2024 live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

“Cobra Kai” and “Blue Beetle” star Xolo Maridueña voices Heisuke Mashimo, a genius sniper who joins the Sakamoto family. Since his debut in the animated show, he has been rumored to be in the second season of the live-action “One Piece.” Fans believe he is the perfect fit for Portgas D. Ace in the series.

Vinnie Hacker makes his voice acting debut as the main antagonist Kei Uzuki, also known as “X” and “Slur.” A long-time anime fan, Hacker has expressed his newfound love for the acting genre and his excitement to dabble in the creation of his main entertainment medium.

One of the best aspects of “Sakamoto Days” is its fluid animation and choreography. However, many manga fans criticized the animation style.

Some fans called the animated adaptations of the manga panels lazy. Fans said the lack of detail in certain scenes showcased the animation team's lack of understanding between still images and creating dynamic moments. The debate is frequent among anime and manga fans.

However, the animation style adds to the realistic scenarios and each character’s relatability. While some fans hoped for the animated series to take on the manga’s more dynamic style, it is refreshing to see the manga’s comedic side portrayed in the animation style. The choice also adds a brighter, enigmatic edge to the story.

Every fight scene is crafted with creativity, showcasing Sakamoto’s resourcefulness as he uses everyday objects like a cash register or rubber bands to outsmart his enemies. The humor is just as sharp as the action, seamlessly blending slapstick moments with clever dialogue.

The supporting cast adds even more depth, with characters like Shin, a mind-reading ex-assassin, and Lu, a martial arts expert. Shin and Lu’s dynamic with Sakamoto brings both comedic and emotional moments, making the series more than just an action spectacle.

For fans of anime like “One Punch Man” or “Spy x Family,” “Sakamoto Days” offers a similar mix of exhilarating battles, wholesome character interactions and laugh-out-loud humor.

Whether you are drawn in by its stunning fights, lovable characters or unique premise, “Sakamoto Days” is an exciting ride that delivers on all fronts.
