Buckeyes spoil Ohio's shot at two in a row

For the fourth time on its five game road stint, the Ohio field hockey team was sent home without a win, as they were defeated in overtime by Ohio State yesterday 3-2.

The Buckeyes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Ohio fought back when Chelsea Mearig scored at the end of the first half.

Ohio then tied the score on a Liz Holtzman penalty corner goal at the 56:36 mark in the second half. Ohio State, however, would prove victorious in overtime on the strength of an unassisted goal off the stick of forward Vanessa Immordino.

Although it was the scarlet and gray that put the game winner in the back of the net in the overtime period, Ohio (1-4) midfielder Kristen Hann said she thought her team controlled the Buckeyes (4-2) most of the contest.

"We're obviously upset that we didn't win today, because we dominated thewhole game," she said.

Ohio coach Shelly Morris, still searching for one of her two goalies to emerge as a definitive starter, gave the nod to Ashley Pitkin, but replaced Pitkin with Jen Cote in the second half. Pitkin made one save and gave up two goals, while Cote made ten saves and allowed only the game-winner.

Jen did an excellent job in the second half and overtime

Morrissaid. She made some really good decisions in the second half and kept usin there.

Despite Ohio's record, back Danielle Jenness said the team has not suffered a blow to its confidence.

I don't think we're disappointed by any means she said. Ithink we wish we would've played at the beginning of the season like we're playingnow.

Jenness said the intangibles have improved since the team's first weekend series in Boston.

We have more composure she said. We're more together rightnow

I feel. Morris said she is confident the Bobcats will be able to turn around the 2003 season, but results need to change on both ends of the field.

We need a shutout; we want to limit other teams' opportunities

Morrissaid. And we need to score more goals.

Morris said the squad can take a positive from the game, despite the defeat.

We dominated them today. We need to recognize that and get fired up onit

she said.

The loss comes in the finale of a string of consecutive road games to open up the 2003 season. Morris said playing long stretches of road games is not an excuse for a losing record. Still, the Bobcats are ready to play at home.

I definitely think come Saturday we'll be fired up

Jenness said. The Bobcats will play their home opener against Southwest Missouri State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peggy Pruitt Field.
