Athens coach Ryan Adams still not officially naming a starting quarterback

Athens coach Ryan Adams refused to confirm an earlier report from The Post that stated Athens quarterback Brendan Sano will be the starter going forward.

Both quarterbacks, including Treyce Albin, worked with the first team offense Tuesday, as Adams said he will make a decision within the next couple of days. Athens plays its first conference game Friday at Alexander High School, so the timing is not ideal for a quarterback controversy, even though both quarterbacks have proven worthy of the starting spot.

Sano set a career high in total yards in his lone start against Watkins Memorial High School with 305. Albin racked up over 200 yards in his lone start against Warren High School in the one half he played in the blowout.

Both players are 1-0 as the starter. The Bulldogs lone loss of the season came when Albin suffered a concussion during the third quarter and Sano had to play on short notice.

Their resumés are almost identical. Sano’s start came against tougher competition, but Albin is currently the incumbent starter. He beat out Sano for the position in the offseason.

The fact that Adams has been hesitant with his decision speaks volumes about how much Sano impressed him last Friday. Athens will be in capable hands either way, but making a quarterback switch this early could set a dangerous precedent.

If Adams changes his mind that quickly once, it's fair to wonder if he might do it again. Whichever quarterback he picks as his starter to begin conference play will have plenty to look at over his shoulder.
