President Roderick McDavis speaks at the student senate meeting on October 7, 2015.

Ohio University Student Senate to start semester off with an internally focused meeting

The body will hear presentations from BobcaThon and Bobcat Student Orientation.

As students are easing their way back into the swing of things this week, so is Ohio University’s Student Senate.

Senate's meeting Wednesday will focus mostly on internal issues. While no resolutions will be voted on, senate members will hear three presentations.

“This is just us,” Student Senate President Gabby Bacha said. “This is just our internal body meeting, as we should (have) every week.”

There wasn’t enough time to discuss resolutions for the upcoming meeting, but resolutions are already being worked on for later in the semester, Bacha said.

“I think everybody’s itching to get back, and I don’t want to bombard them too much week one,” she said. “We kind of were able to settle down at the end of the last semester, and so this meeting is kind of our kick-off to get the momentum going.”

The body will first hear a presentation from Bacha and Paige Klatt, senate commissioner for LGBTQA affairs, about Bobcat Student Orientation, often referred to as BSO.

Klatt, who has been an orientation leader, college representative and student coordinator at previous BSOs, said she will present on the application process to become an orientation leader and the different positions offered. She will also share her own experience with the program.

“I hope that this presentation encourages more students to apply for this position because it is a life-changing experience that cannot be replicated,” Klatt said in an email. “This position gives you the opportunity to form working relationships with not just OU staff, but faculty, too. I'm hoping that more students apply, in order to experience the magic of BSO.”

Members of senate will also hear a presentation about BobcaThon, a 12-hour dance marathon that benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio, from Anna Seethaler, the director of organizational relations for the student group planning the event.

Student Senate already has a team that participates in BobcaThon, but it is only made up of six people, Seethaler said.

“We're trying to go in there and create more interest and get more people to join their team,” Seethaler said. “Getting a huge organization like Student Senate on board would hopefully get us a lot more visibility and a lot more involvement on campus.”

The meeting will also consist of a conduct and discipline presentation and commissioner reports.

“I’m excited,” Bacha said. “I think (senate members) will be happy to be back.”
