Ohio University Student Senate will vote Wednesday on a bill that demands stricter regulations for accessing and purchasing firearms in the state of Ohio.
One of the bill's requests is for the state of Ohio to ban semi-automatic assault weapons. It also urges Ohio representatives to follow in the steps of seven states that have expanded the Brady Background check system to include all gun sales and eliminate loopholes allowing felons, domestic abusers and fugitives to purchase guns.
“We recognize the ways in which gun violence plagues many different communities and constituencies, and our overall goal is to see lives saved through stricter regulations on firearms,” the bill states.
Senate will also vote on a bill that aims to ease the "digital divide" in Southeast Ohio. That bill would ask the state legislature for funding for “internet infrastructure expansion” in more than 11 counties, including Athens.
The bill requests that state officials look for solutions to problems of broadband access, speed and reliability “with utmost haste as a matter of life, death and human rights.”
Senate will also vote on one resolution that asks to spend $200 on 500 informational pamphlets about reproductive health.
