High School Football: Athens’ Saltzman named Southeast Ohio co-offensive player of the year

Zacciah Saltzman was named co-offensive player of the year for the Southeast Ohio district.

The Associated Press announced the All-Southeast Ohio District football team Tuesday. Athens running back Zacciah Saltzman was named co-offensive player of the year for the district, splitting the award with Nate Rosenbauer of Chillicothe.

Lining up at running back and sometimes taking direct snaps, Saltzman was the dominant force on the Bulldog offense all season, averaging 211 yards on the ground and almost four touchdowns per contest.

He finished the season with 2,117 yards rushing and 37 touchdowns, just seven scores shy of the the Athens all-time record for rushing touchdowns in a single season.

Joining Saltzman on the first team all-district team was senior all-purpose player Heath Wiseman and senior defensive lineman Dylan Cochran. Hunter Mullins, a utility player for the Bulldogs, was named Special Mention.

Wiseman was featured in the Bulldog offense, lining up at wide receiver, running back, and occasionally taking snaps at quarterback. He finished the season with 1,079 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.

Cochran was an anchor for the Bulldog defense, finishing the year with 58 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Mullins ended the season with 174 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs finished the season 6-4 just one year removed from a state championship game appearance.
