Volleyball: Ohio struggles, loses to Dayton in four sets

After a successful weekend in Alabama, the Bobcats had some early season confidence.
They hit over .300 as they came out with three wins.

The high hitting percentage didn’t carry over Tuesday night, as Ohio lost to Dayton, 3-1, in a match at the Thomas J. Frericks Athletic and Convocation Center.

Although they held Dayton to a .194 hitting percentage, Ohio finished the game at .066, their worst of the season.

Coach Deane Webb mentioned Monday in his press conference that Dayton was larger than the teams the Bobcats had seen before, creating problems finding places to land kills.
Dayton, a team that has made 12 of the last 14 NCAA Tournaments, was just too much for Ohio.

While the team didn't hit well, there were still signs of promise. Sophomore Lizzie Stephens had 13 kills. Freshman Tia Jimerson had eight kills and led the team in hitting percentage. Vera Giacomazzi had a match-high 37 assists. The youth for Ohio played well.

After having set point in the first set, at 25-24, the Bobcats committed two attack errors to give the Flyers the lead. Dayton went on to win the set, 28-26.

But it wasn’t just the set that was lost. Jaime Kosiorek was injured during the first set. The second set was a winning one for Ohio, but the Bobcats lost Katie Nelson to injury during that set, too.

The third set was Ohio’s worst. The Bobcats lost 25-8 before being closed out in the fourth set to finish the match.

The Bobcats (3-1) will open their home schedule and play in The Convo for the first time Friday, when they will take on Georgia in the Bobcat Invitational presented by Texas Roadhouse. The match will start at 10 a.m.
