Alex Wind of Ohio University pulls out the last lap in his race at the Ohio Cross Country Invitational in extreme heat in Athens, Ohio on Friday, September 5, 2014.

Cross Country: Bobcats get unexpected weekend off

Shawnee State coach Eric Putnam didn’t believe his team was ready for the Ohio Invitational based on their performance at the Dayton 5k last weekend.

The Bobcats were expecting to run this weekend in the friendly confines of their own campus here in Athens.

The Ohio Invitational, however, was cancelled earlier this week stemming from Shawnee State coach Eric Putnam's disappointment in his teams' performance last weekend in Dayton.

Putnam decided to back out of this weekend’s Ohio Invitational so that he could get his team back to training for the rest of the season.

Shawnee State's best runner, Cody Redman, finished 31st out of 77 runners at the Dayton Flyer on Sept. 5.

According to Ohio's invite pamphlet, entries for the race were due by Sept. 8 with an entry fee of $150 per team.

The Ohio Invitational was the Bobcats only home meet all season, and the team will next travel to Blacksburg, Virginia for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite.

At the Dayton Flyer, Ohio's men's team placed first overall with junior Alex Wind's 15:42.1 time. The women's side placed second with junior Ellen Isaac's time of 18:12.1. Isaac also finished second overall.
