Bobcats back in full swing at Florida tournament

Ohio lost to its rival Miami on Monday.

Ohio University’s men’s golf team was defeated by rival Miami in the first round of the Earl Yestingmeier Match Play by a score of 5-1 on Monday.

The second round was suspended due to rain and resumed Tuesday morning. The Bobcats were victorious over the Flyers of Dayton in that round with a score of 5-1. The third round was not played.

Ohio placed fifth overall in the event.

This tournament was held in Dade City, Florida, at the Lake Jovita Country Club. In total, eight teams competed, including Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Seton Hall, Ball State, Miami, Ohio, Toledo and Dayton. Freshmen Brady Bohl and Grant Engel, sophomores Ty Herriott and Peyton White, junior Brad Burgess and senior Drew Mlynarski represented the Bobcats.

Bohl was the lone man to come out with a victory for the ‘Cats in the first round. In the second round, Engel was the single OU golfer to take a loss.

Coach Bob Cooley was content with the course conditions despite the rain that cut the tournament short.

“The course held up fine,” Cooley said. “I mean it drained pretty well, and they mowed it again this morning before we played and it was fine.”

Although this was one of the team’s best finishes this year, Cooley pointed out two areas to improve on going forward.

“Hitting the ball on the fairway off the tee, we didn’t do a real good job of that,” Cooley said. “That and putting were probably our two biggest things we need to improve upon.”

The team’s next tournament will be held on Feb. 23 and 24, in Hilton Head, South Carolina, at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
