Director of Code Enforcement David Riggs said the building is supposed to have two restaurants, one being Raising Canes.
A company came to the City of Athens with plans to install the restaurant, he said. Canes will be situated at the front side of the southeast corner of the building, which is the part along West Union Street.
Riggs said the company came to him last year to get approval and is currently waiting for state-approved plans.
“They’re just waiting to get their final plans, and they should be starting work this year,” he said.
Ohio Department of Commerce Public Information Officer Jarrod Clay said partial building permits were issued in early February.
Permits obtained by The Post list PM Design Group Inc. as the submitter.
“Tenant improvement for the portion of the first floor of the building, new quick service restaurant,” the permit read.
A permit for plumbing plans and another for building plans was approved.
Clay said the submitters have one year from the date of last approval to begin construction. As of Friday, there have been no requested inspections, indicating that construction has yet to begin.
