Today is Monday, March 21. Here’s what you need to know:
Good morning,
On Saturday night, following the Bobcats’ win over Virginia, Ohio University students took to Court Street to celebrate.
In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the No. 13 seeded Ohio Bobcats beat the No. 4 seeded Virginia Cavaliers, 62-58. The victory was the first in the March Madness tournament since 2012, when OU advanced to the regional semifinal.
This led to videos and photos surfacing on social media of OU students praising their team by honking cars, crowding bars, storming the streets and shouting “OU, Oh yeah.” Due to the crowd, the Athens Police Department had to clear the streets. There were no reported arrests.
University officials are encouraging students and fans to be more safe and responsible regarding social distancing guidelines if the Bobcats beat Creighton, a 5th seed that barely beat the No. 12 seeded UC Santa Barbara, 63-62.
The Ohio University Alumni Association and Ohio Bobcat Club are putting on an online pep rally including video messages from OU President M. Duane Nellis, former basketball player and current head coach Jeff Boals, the Marching 110 and the Ohio University Dance team in respect to the game.
