The former director of OU’s Global Leadership Center was investigated and had his contract “non-renewed” after allegations of inappropriate conduct while on a trip to Vietnam surfaced.

Emery’s dismissal caused the university to lose about $1.25 million in potential donations.

Director of the Global Leadership Center takes leave of absence

The director of the Global Leadership Center took a leave of absence from his position for reasons not released by the university.

Greg Emery went on a leave of absence from his position as director of the Global Leadership Center last week for reasons the university has not publicly released.

Emery will still be employed by the university during his leave, said Katie Quaranta, an OU spokeswoman, in an email. She did not know if Emery is still receiving the $84,545 salary he was set to make this academic year.

Bob Stewart, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, will now assume the role of interim director of the GLC.

Emery has directed the center, which functions as a two-year certificate program that prepares students for internationally-focused leadership, since 2000. Emery also holds a Fulbright Senior Specialist status in business administration and leadership and has done international work throughout his career.

Management changes are caused by a shift in leadership, said Lorna Jean Edmonds, vice provost for Global Affairs and international studies, in an email shared with faculty.

Her office includes the GLC.

“This comes at a time when the Global Leadership Center requires increased management support as we seek to align the GLC to the global strategy,” Edmonds said. “The goal is to increase its profile and role in experiential international learning for our students. The GLC is a distinct program at Ohio University that we see playing an even greater transformative role in the cross-cultural learning of our students.”

Stewart said that he will assume the temporary leadership position to help maintain stability after Emery’s leave of absence.

He said he took the position on the basis of knowing students in the GLC and added that he will not receive more pay for the position.

Stewart said he wanted to provide “stability” for the center as it undergoes the leadership change. He is set to make $116,636 this year.

Quaranta said she does not know whether Emery was placed on a leave of absence or left personally.
