Life's a Beach: Exploring the work of Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is regarded by many to be the best player in the National Football League. As quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes has racked up accolades, winning Super Bowl LIV, league MVP and the ESPY for Best NFL Player all in 2019-20. His record-breaking performance on the field has solidified him as a favorite among fans and the media and as a target among his opponents.

Before entering his fourth season with the Chiefs, Mahomes signed a $503 million 10-year contract extension on July 6, 2020, putting his average salary at $45 million a year, and earning him the honor of highest-paid player in NFL history. His deal overpowers those of seasoned veterans such as Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger and Saints’ QB Drew Brees. While many know Mahomes for his talent and money, few know him for his philanthropy.

Thus, we have the question: Is Patrick Mahomes more than just a quarterback with a big contract?

In April of 2019, the Chiefs and Mahomes established the 15 and Mahomies Foundation, focusing around aspects of improving the lives of children through health, wellness, and community resources. The foundation also supports other charitable causes such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri and Kansas, as well as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Overall, 15 and Mahomies has 34 total partners since it’s creation.

The foundation raises money through its annual gala, “The Patrick Mahomes 15 and Mahomies Foundation Gala”, and the “Birthday with the Mahomies” event. The gala features a VIP cocktail party and an auction, both of which were held virtually this year due to the ongoing pandemic. Sponsors can pick from various donation levels that will earn them different benefits within the gala.

His second event, “Birthday with the Mahomies”, was held virtually this past September and featured appearances from actor Paul Rudd and Mahomes’ teammates. The event benefited 15 different charities and had over 2,300 donors. Once again, Mahomes auctioned off memorabilia to help gain monies for the featured charitable organizations of the night.

The foundation’s signature program is the 15 for 15 program. It provides grants for 15 different organizations and initiatives focused on work in the classroom and supplies, science, athletics, children with disabilities and more. Organizations can apply for these grants through the 15 and the Mahomies website.

Patrick Mahomes may make headlines weekly for his athletic ability, but he clearly aims for touchdowns in more aspects of life than football. He presents a genuine interest in helping children who have not been afforded the same opportunities as himself through his charitable work. While many may not recognize him as a philanthropist, Mahomes has sealed his name in the books with his young foundation. You may not like the Chiefs, you may not like Mahomes, but the 15 and the Mahomies foundation is something to admire.
