Rick and Morty has focused on the B characters: Summer in the post-apocalyptic war zone universe and Jerry in the amusement park where people never die this season. This week, Beth got her turn.
At the start of the episode, viewers see a man on screen sentenced to die for the crime of eating his son, Tommy. Fans then found out that he was once Beth’s best friend, and they went on adventures in her not so make-believe world, Froopyland.
She once thought the place was a figment of her imagination, but realized Froopyland is actually a world created for her by Rick in her childhood in order to protect the neighborhood kids from her. Apparently, child Beth was psycho.
She realized Tommy wasn’t eaten by his dad, he was lost in Froopyland when she took him there as a girl and went in after him.
Rick accompanied her, and they found a world with mutated creatures formed by Tommy’s relationships with the original creatures in Froopyland. Viewers later saw via a play Tommy wrote that he ate the babies of the creatures because there is no food in Froopyland.
Beth attempted to bring Tommy back, but has lived in Froopyland too long and it’s all he knows. He also distrusts her because as a child, she tried to kill him by pushing him in a lake of honey for having a normal family, unlike her.
Tommy’s creatures began to attack her, and she mercilessly slaughtered them. She thoroughly enjoyed herself until she came to the horrible realization that she has become her father.
Meanwhile, Jerry gets the kids for the weekend and they have to deal with his slightly psycho alien girlfriend, Kiara, who he has entered into a soul bond with.
Fans soon saw all was not well in paradise. Jerry was intimidated and slightly grossed out by her alien appearance. When it becomes clear to the kids that he was only with her to make Beth jealous, Morty and Summer urged Jerry to dump her.
Spoiler alert: She didn’t take it well.
She attempted to murder the kids for being the reason they couldn’t be together, and Jerry blamed the kids’ racist tendencies for the breakup.
Once again, viewers were exposed to Jerry’s lack of will. He doesn’t have the strength to just break up with his girlfriend, so instead he blames his children’s lack of acceptance as the reason for ending the relationship.
Eventually, he told Kiara the truth, but rather than get a large confrontation between the two of them, fans get a very Rick and Morty style ending when they find out that Kiara is only dating Jerry to make her ex jealous. Jerry got out unscathed.
Back at the house after her failed Froopyland expedition, Beth shared her realization that she is exactly like him to Rick. She asked for advice, and he advised her to take off and he would leave a clone in her place until she decided to return.
Rick spoke with such a calm demeanor and acted like it was normal. It’s hard not to think that maybe Rick has done this before, or maybe he is even a clone now.
The episode ended with viewers questioning Beth’s final decision. The episode didn’t specify whether or not she stays or goes.
With one episode in the season remaining, a lot of questions are left unanswered. What was Beth’s choice? Where is Evil Morty and what is he planning? Will Jerry and Beth ever get back together, or are they really going through with the divorce? And where is Mr. Poopybutthole, and how is his physical therapy going?
One can hope it can all be wrapped up neatly, but knowing Rick and Morty, that probably won’t be the case.
