Editorial: Go register to vote in Ohio's primary

Feb. 16 is the last day to register to vote in Ohio's primary.

Two days ago businessman Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders stomped their respective competitors in the New Hampshire presidential primary.

Whether those are results you love or loathe, one thing should be certain: You should exercise that opinion by voting in Ohio’s primary next month.

To make sure that happens, register to vote. That sounds like common sense, but many still forget or don’t consider it. Too often, those people are college students.

The last day to register for Ohio’s March 15 primary election is Feb. 16.

For those of you who don’t know what a primary is, that’s OK. Basically, each state has either a caucus or primary. In a caucus, residents of a state decide who they want to represent them as delegates. That is done at meetings using methods like standing at either end of the room or raising hands. A primary is a little different, using a secret ballot system to determine each state’s preferred candidate.

Ohio has a mixed primary, meaning that independent voters can choose to vote for either Democrats or Republicans.

You might be short on time, but that shouldn’t keep you from stopping by the Athens County Board of Elections on Court Street to register yourself.

If you happen to be registered to vote in your home county (and you call Ohio home), the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is March 12.

Registering to vote doesn’t take much time at all, and once you’ve done it, you don’t have to renew it or change it unless you move.

So, go get registered or get your absentee ballot.
