Dr. Fauci explains why Americans still might be wearing masks in 2022; Ohio as a state needs to improve its LGBTQ+ protections

Today is Monday, February 22. Here’s what you need to know:

Good morning,

Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that even if America is reaching a “degree of normality,” there is a chance Americans will still be wearing masks in 2022.

Though Fauci can’t pin exactly when the U.S. will return to the way it was pre-COVID, he does believe that by the end of the year there will be significant changes in the way we are currently living. However, a lot could change over the course of time.

Fauci believes the determining factor of when normal life will resume depends on the American people and the “community prevalence of the coronavirus.” Before that can happen, Fauci notes that he would like to see “the level of transmission drop to a baseline so low,” so that if one is exposed to someone who is infected, there will be minimal threat.

Fauci also states that once people are vaccinated and the level of the virus in the community is low, then people won’t have to wear masks as much, but until almost all individuals are vaccinated, they will still be prevalent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 63 million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered as of Sunday.
