As the winners for the Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday afternoon, two former Post reporters had a reason to celebrate.
Wesley Lowery, The Post’s editor-in-chief for the 2011-12 academic year, and the team at The Boston Globe won The Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage for its report on the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.
Lowery and the Globe team beat out another former “Postie” for the award.
The Post’s managing editor during the 2012-13 academic year, Rebecca McKinsey, was a finalist for the breaking news coverage award as a part of The Arizona Republic team that covered the wildfire in July 2013 that killed 19 firefighters.
“They’re both excellent journalists and the recognition is well-deserved,” said Ryan Clark, current editor-in-chief of The Post. “This illustrates that former Post reporters are among the country’s best journalists”
Both Lowery and McKinsey wrote for the campus news section of The Post before becoming the section’s editors.
“One of the things I learned both at OU and working for The Post was to be able to value that really collaborative reporting and that was something that we had to do,” Lowery said.
Lowery wrote profiles of people who were at the marathon when the bombs went off and was one of the reporters who covered President Barack Obama’s visit to Boston four days after the bombing. He also went to Watertown, Mass., to follow the suspects who engaged police in a shootout.
Tuesday marks the bombing’s one year anniversary.
Lowery, who has since left the Globe and now works for The Washington Post, said he was proud to be a part of the team.
McKinsey, who is currently reporting for The Times of Israel, said she was “so proud and excited” to be a part of the team of finalists.
