Ohio University sophomore Kevon Powell pins Kent State University sophomore Edilberto Vinas to the mat. The Bobcats defeated the Golden Flashes 21-16 for the first time since 2005 during their meet held at The Convocation Jan. 24, 2014.

Wrestling: Ohio downs Appalachian State, Claxton still undefeated

After surrendering the lead, Ohio comes back and defeats Appalachian State, 26-15.

“Just go out and wrestle.”

That’s what coach Joel Greelee told junior Kagan Squire before his match as Appalachian State took a 12-11 lead after two straight pins of the Bobcats.

Squire followed his coach’s advice, winning by a 9-7 decision. After his victory, the Bobcats never looked back.

“He wrestled a pretty good match,” Greenlee said. “You can’t worry about the team, you just have to worry about yourself. You just have to know the situation.”

Ohio took an early 11-0 lead in their match at the Varsity Gym in Boone, N.C. with a major decision win from redshirt junior Cody Walters and decision victories from fellow redshirt juniors Andrew Romanchik and Phill Wellington.

Appalachian State rallied back though, with consecutive pins in the first period of freshman heavyweight Zack Parker and junior Keovon Powell, giving them a 12-11 lead. But, after the decision victory from Squire, the Bobcats ran away with the victory.

Redshirt junior Tywan Claxton picked up his first fall of the season and extended his undefeated streak to 13-0 as he pinned Appalachian State’s Javon Johnson. Claxton’s pin was the only fall of the evening for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will compete at home for the first time next Saturday, as they take No. 5 Missouri at The Convo.
