Parents flock to Ohio University for more than just a visit

There was a lot to do this Parents Weekend.

This year’s Parents Weekend had parents arriving Friday in sunshine and blue skies, but during the last half of the Ohio University football game, parents and students evacuated Peden Stadium in a long downpour.

Even though the main events of Parents Weekend, such as the football game against Southeastern Louisiana University, occurred on Saturday, many parents arrived Friday.

Other sporting events such as the hockey game in Bird Arena against John Carroll University were available, but some parents just decided to go out to eat on Friday at notable restaurants with Athens flavor.

Bob Norton, who arrived on Friday to visit his daughter, said he went to the Pigskin Bar and Grille on Friday.

“(I) got some hot sauce that is so hot it could burn you a new one,” he said.

Parents that arrived on Saturday morning had the opportunity to go to morning events featured by Ohio University. The PARENTS brunch in Baker Ballroom included a raffle and music, while parents broke off into lines to eat the foods such as bacon, eggs and French toast.

Paul Hardy said he had a good experience at the brunch, which he attended with his son and wife.

“It was well worth $15,” he said. “Everything was handled very professionally.”

Afterward, families flocked to the Peden to watch football game in hopes to beat Southeastern Louisiana University.

However, the football team wasn’t all the families came for. Many also came to see the Marching 110 during half time.

The Marching 110, dubbed the “The Most Exciting Band in the Land,” performed “Hey Mama” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj, “Watch Me” by Silentó and “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars.

The band is infamous for playing covers of chart-topping music and adding a vigorous amount of body work.

“I like how the band whipped and nay-nayed,” Rachel Cherry, a freshman studying journalism, said.

Cherry’s father, Ed, also attended the game.

“It was simply awesome,” he said.

Mike Shear, an OU alumnus, said he enjoyed visiting his son while going to the football game and watching the Marching 110.

Even though there was a huge turnout at the football game, some parents skipped out on the game and simply went out to eat or shop with their children.

“We plan on maximizing our time with our daughter, buying (her) some gear and finding her classes,” Kelli Smith, a parent visiting Athens, said.

Regardless of the weather or school-sponsored activities, parents had a weekend dedicated to visit with their kids.

“It’s really nice (to) see my parents back in Athens since my freshman year,” David Young, a senior studying business management, said.
