Letter to the Editor: Register to vote

To the Editor:

Now is the time to be sure that you are ready for the November 5 general election! The first step is to register to vote, or to update your registration. The deadline for registration is October 7.

To be eligible to register to vote, you must be 18 years old by Election Day, November 5. You must be a U.S. citizen. You must be a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days before the election. People who have served time for a felony in the past and who have completed their sentences and are not currently incarcerated are eligible to register to vote in Ohio.

Voter registration forms are available at the Athens County Board of Elections office at 15 S. Court St., at public libraries and at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, among other places. You can also register to vote online at VoteOhio.gov

We encourage every voter to look up your registration status at VoteOhio.gov, to be sure your registration is current and that your address is correct. Every time you move, you must update your registration.

We encourage every eligible voter to register, to learn about candidates and ballot issues and to vote. Democracy depends on the participation of all eligible voters.
