Dr. Timothy Law, assistant professor in OU-HCOM, was named Mentor of the Year by the American Osteopathic Association
Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty member Timothy Law was given the 2014 Mentor of the Year award by the American Osteopathic Association during the Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition in Seattle late last month.
Law, who is an assistant professor of family medicine, director of the Rural and Urban Scholars Pathways program and medical director of the Clinical and Translational Research Unit, was
selected for the award out of 12 original nominees and five finalists.
“Ask anyone at OU-HCOM who has ever listened to Dr. Law talk, and they will tell you that he is truly amazing,” said Katelyn Tondo-Steele, a third-year medical student. “He puts his patients first and gives them the best care possible.”
The award honors those whose involvement with students helps to develop future physicians in a postive way.
“I go out to dinner with students, I have them over to my apartment to watch football and hockey games,” Law said. “I think it’s my personal approach so students feel comfortable asking me any questions, things outside of how you take care of somebody with the flu.”
Law said he actually did not know that he was nominated for the award until he received an email telling him that he won.
“I saw an email with the byline from the AOA with the word mentor in it, and I originally thought they were just asking me to sit on a committee to help pick the next Mentor of the Year,” he said.
Students, interns and faculty members can nominate a person through an application for his or her work with students and coworkers.
“If it wasn’t for Dr. Law, I wouldn’t have chosen primary care,” said Marc Richards, a third-year medical student. “He is the perfect embodiment of how to balance a work-home life, and he showed me how to balance that. He is truly a great person.”
