An Athens woman who said she has a heightened sense of intuition and psychic skills couldn’t tell her clients which lottery numbers to play, but she does try to help them sort out problems and make good decisions.
Kathleen Covalt started her business, Pure Energy, in 1998 — first in Illinois and then various cities in New York before settling down in Athens about four years ago.
“I don’t think of myself as a psychic, like the noun,” Covalt said. ”It’s more like I have psychic skills, like the adjective.”
A self-described lifetime lover of education and “seeker,” Covalt has a number of degrees in fields ranging from philosophy to counseling, including a doctorate in educational psychology with a specialization in transpersonal psychology.
Transpersonal psychology focuses on the nature of the soul, Covalt said, and has allowed her to begin weaving together different aspects of herself.
“Transpersonal psychology focuses on the full spectrum of psychology: religious experiences, mind, body and soul — the whole gamut,” said Shannon Fries, development coordinator at Sofia University in California, which specializes in transpersonal education. “It also opens students up to study multiple spiritual paths.”
Covalt said her education background, coupled with her Catholic background, provides her with a “pool” of knowledge and information to draw on in order to help her clients.
Working from her home office, Covalt usually meets with her clients between one and four times, preferring to get right to the roots of a problem during an hour-long session.
Covalt typically aids a client in obtaining clarity on one general issue. She also connects clients with deceased loved ones and addresses some health issues.
“Kat asks questions to pinpoint things that I didn’t know I was thinking or feeling,” said John Best, Covalt’s brother. “When she asks a question, it opens my mind. I’ll start explaining a situation or story, and she’ll hit the heart of the matter in a way that makes me realize what I am feeling.”
“She leans on more holistic, spiritual solutions,” Best added. “That’s where her brand differs from traditional therapy.”
Covalt charges $90 for an hour-long session and gives a half-off discount to students.
