Dads can indulge in the food and culture of Athens this weekend

Students can take their dads to sporting events and a comedy show this weekend.

Morgan Kramer's dad has visited every year for Dads Weekend, and every year she takes him to one of his favorite food trucks: Ali Baba’s.

“It’s this huge joke between us because I hate it and I think it’s so embarrassing, but he loves it, so we make a big deal out of it every time he comes,” Kramer, a senior studying child and family studies, said.

Although Kramer said she has never taken her dad to the events specifically for Dads Weekend, there is still plenty to do on and off campus.

A number of activities are available for people to attend this upcoming weekend.

Saturday and Sunday, there will be ziplining at The Ridges put on by Outdoor Pursuits, according to the Dads Weekend itinerary.

There will also be the Alden Open 2015, an indoor golf course set up around the library, which will occur from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to nature hikes also put on by Outdoor Pursuits, there are a number of sporting events such as the men’s and women’s basketball games and a volleyball game.

There is also a special event called Pops and Pucks where students can take their dads to dinner and drinks at 4 p.m. and to the hockey game where the Bobcats will take on the Dragons.

“It’s just an event to show dads what we do and just have a good time,” Hannah Hershfield, the public relations executive for University Program Council, said. “It will (have) a burger bar, a cash drink bar and a DJ.”

The event starts at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Walter Rotunda and then the puck drops for the game against Drexel University at 7:30 p.m.

“It is always a big, popular event,” Hershfield said. “Last year we had people coming in at the very last minute to get in.”

Although this is not the first time UPC has planned events for Dads Weekend, Hershfield said this year’s involvement with Ohio Hockey is different than previous years.

One of the special events for Bobcat dads includes the comedy show featuring Jordan Klepper and John Hodgman from The Daily Show.

The show will take place Saturday at 8 p.m. at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Andrew Holzaepfel, the senior associate director for the Campus Involvement Center, said he expects Saturday night to be a full house due to the good sales so far.

“I think OU is kind of special in that we certainly do more family weekends than most institutions,” he said. “It’s just a nice way to have a weekend where you can be with family and show them what it’s like to be here at OU.”

Even with a schedule full of events, John Timmons, a freshman studying political science, said his dad is not coming up this weekend. He said his dad can visit him any time at OU, not just during a designated weekend.

“I don’t even have to have him come down for an event where all of the dads are here, I could just have my dad down whenever the hotels are cheaper,” Timmons said. “We could just post up, drink some beer, do our thing and that’s more of a father-son bond to have your dad up whenever.”
