Cinema and Syntax: Going to the movies is a great date, so get off my back

My first date was in eighth grade. I was in that awkward phase where I had gone through most of puberty, but my body was definitely not proportional. So it was amazing I got a date in the first place.

My first boyfriend and I went to a theater nearby to see Tangled, which is why it’s probably my favorite Disney princess film. His parents drove us and sat seven rows behind us. Even with sticky floors and uncomfortable seats, I will always cherish the memory of sitting in a theater and the McDonald’s meal we ate after.

But a newsroom discussion the other day turned into a heated debate — or rather me yelling at people about how they are wrong and I am right. They said seeing a movie is a bad date, especially on the first one.

A person’s choice in movies gives a person insight to their personality. If both people enjoy a particular actor or genre that automatically gives them something to bond over. Like, for me, if a guy appreciates Leonardo DiCaprio and will repeatedly watch Shutter Island and Inception, they are a keeper. If the person can put up with watching 27 Dresses a million times or take me to see the latest romantic comedy, that is a person I need in my life.

Most of the complaints people have with going to the movie for a date is the fact there is no talking. For me, that's a perk, because it means I have less of a chance to say something embarrassing. But after the movie, there is plenty to talk about. A conversation can be started by talking about whether or not the movie was good, and grabbing a bite to eat or an ice cream cone can accompany the discussion.

Obviously, I am a big fan of movies, so my go-to date option is to see a movie. Whether it’s the first date or the 50th, I will always choose going to the movies over anything else.
