The Weekender: Superfans and Urinetown

Kendall Adams and her younger sister Annabelle were determined to get out of the nosebleed seats and into the pit for Taylor Swift’s “Red Tour” at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. in May 2013.

The two approached one of the tour’s staff members on the escalator and asked if he could move them into the pit. The staffer said moving them up would be a fire hazard.

"We would risk a fire for Taylor Swift,” Adams, a freshman studying communication studies, said to the man. (Link)

Urinetown: In a futuristic world, a greedy corporation holds a monopoly on water and forces its citizens to pay a price for the right to pee.

The dark comedy Urinetown explores the question of sustainability in a dystopian society. As the first mainstage production of Spring Semester, the musical will be performed for two weeks at 8 p.m. in the Forum Theater in the Radio-Television Building.

In a world where “water is worth its weight in gold” due to a 20-year drought, Urine Good Company controls the rights of citizens’ use of water, and the government has banned the use of private toilets so no one can use the restroom freely. Facing violence and fear perpetrated by the police, the poor come together to rise against that injustice.

The show, an equal display of acting and musical talent, required close collaboration between the Division of Theater and the School of Music. Daniel C. Dennis, a visiting professor of voice and movement in the Division of Theater, directs the show. The cast includes students from both the Division of Theater and the School of Music, and a pit accompanies each live performance.

“What’s really wonderful about it is that the moments that are heightened emotionally are the musical ones,” Kristin Conrad, who plays Penelope Pennywise, said.

Media4Health: A few students are using media savviness to illustrate realities.

The African Media4Health, a four-member group, will present its award-winning project about non-communicable diseases titled "Roll Back NCD” in the Multicultural Center on Thursday.

The project was created for Ohio University’s 2nd Annual Global Health Case Competition. During the process, teams present projects based on a themed 21st-century global health issue.

Denounce Your Martyr: Although metal lyrics can be difficult to decipher at times, a careful listener may realize Denounce Your Martyr is singing about the video game Dark Souls.

Denounce Your Martyr, a metal band based near Columbus, will be joining fellow Columbus metal band Asylum Effect and Athens bands Watch Them Rot and TFU for a free show at Casa Nueva on Saturday.

Paul Bolin, a guitarist for Denounce Your Martyr, spoke with The Post in a phone interview to discuss screaming in metal, Dark Souls and writing progressive and technical songs.

Winter Dance Concert: For the Winter Dance Concert, the student dancers will perform in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, a larger venue than they are accustomed to, making the concert one of the most formal dances for the Division of Dance.

The concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

“This show is mostly for our professors and the guest artists to showcase their work and their creativity and also to give us an opportunity to perform on a more formal level, a more formal venue,” Corrinne Bailey, a junior studying dance, said.
