TV Review: Michael helps the Winchesters take on God during Thursday's episode of ‘Supernatural’

In the midseason finale of Supernatural, Adam (Jake Abel) gets some closure from Dean (Jensen Ackles), and Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Eileen (Shoshannah Stern) take on a vampire case, or so they thought. Here’s a recap of the episode if you weren’t able to watch:

Rowena is the Queen of hell

During the previous episode, Cas (Misha Collins) helped Sam with his shoulder wound, and Dean killed his older hunter friend.

When Eileen and Sam get back from a werewolf case and Eileen eats a burger while Sam eats a salad, Dean walks into the kitchen with a hunch about the demon tablet. The tablet was dictated by God as a resource to use if angels and demons ever escaped out of heaven and hell.

They bring in Donatello (Keith Szarabajka) to read the tablet. Dean explains to him that if God would put away Alamara, his sister, then maybe, just maybe, the Winchesters could put away God. They can’t kill God because God is needed to balance out creation.

When Donatello starts translating the tablet, he notices that Metatron put footnotes in to give context. According to Metatron, God had a “secret fear” that “he shares only with his favorite,” which, at the time, would have been Michael.

In order to find Michael, Sam, Dean and Cas go to hell to talk to Michael, where they come across Rowena (Ruth Connell). When she died, her soul went to hell, and she took the title of the Queen of hell, just like Crowley. Rowena helps out the boys and sends her demons to find Michael in hell. After some searching, Michael’s not in hell, which means he’s topside.

Michael agrees to help

The scene cuts to a diner where Michael is. Adam Milligan, the third son of John Winchester, is Michael’s vessel. In the season five finale, Sam pushed Michael, possessing Adam’s body, into hell. For the past 10 years, Michael has been in hell until the doors opened. In the diner, Adam eats a burger for the first time in 10 years. The audience sees the two of them, Adam and Michael, but they’re in Adam’s head. The two are friends and have a working relationship. Adam says that  he met Sam and Dean once and then they let him rot in hell, so “family sucks.”

All of the sudden, Lilith (Anna Grace Barlow) sits down and demands that Michael come with her because God (Rob Benedict) wants to talk. Michael isn’t interested, burns her up and then makes everyone in the diner forget what they witnessed. Because of the magnitude of power, Donatello senses Michael’s location and calls Dean.

Cas prays to Michael and says that God isn’t who he knew, and God is the common enemy. Surprisingly, Michael decides to come to talk. When Cas asks Michael if he remembers who Cas is, Michael says, “You called me ass-butt and set me on fire,” which is perfectly accurate. Dean and Sam walk out, and Cas traps him in holy oil and then puts angel cuffs on.

Back at the bunker, Cas tries to explain to Michael that God isn’t who he was; he’s writing a story. Cas shows Michael a highlight reel about God’s past, and Michael finally sees the truth. He gives the boys a spell that God used to put Amara away. The ingredients are fairly simple.

Michael opens a rift to Purgatory

The only difficult ingredient is a leviathan blossom, which only grows in Purgatory. Michael opens a rift, which will stay open for 12 hours.

Dean apologizes to Adam

Dean asks to talk to Adam, and he apologizes to leaving him in hell for the past 10 years. Dean says, “Adam, I want you to know we are sorry. What happened to you, you’re a good man. You didn’t deserve that.” Adam responds with, “Since when do we get what we deserve? Good luck.”

It’s a running joke that Sam and Dean forgot they had another brother. The episode gave the audience some closure about Adam’s status and whether or not Sam and Dean actually remembered.

Chuck tricks Eileen

Eileen gets a phone call from her friend, Sue (Luvia Peterson), who is working a vampire case. When Eileen asks Sam for help and they get to her location, Sue is nowhere to be found. There was no case. There was no Sue. Sue was really Chuck.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
