With the release of four live action series, an animated series and four movies throughout 2021, it’s no surprise that Marvel has left us hungry for more. But, never fear, as more movies and series are slated to come out throughout 2022, and we’ve put together a comprehensive list. Here’s what Marvel movies to expect next year:
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)
Benedict Cumberbatch is back to reprise his role as the titular Dr. Stephen Strange, alongside actors Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong as Christine Palmer and Wong, respectively. While most of the plot is still largely unknown, we know it follows Doctor Strange in his research on the time stone. Plus, as the title implies, it’s set to explore the concept of the multiverse within the MCU, something that has not heavily been done yet.
What we also know is that Elizabeth Olsen is slated to make an appearance in her role as Wanda Maximoff, leading to a tie-in to Marvel’s extremely successful Wandavision. Furthermore, newcomer Xochitl Gomez is set to make her Marvel debut as America Chavez, a superpowered teenager from another dimension. Sam Raimi, director of films such as the Evil Dead trilogy, is set to direct the movie, meaning you can likely expect a scare or two from it.
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
As the first character in the MCU to have a fourth movie made about them, Thor’s next appearance looks promising. After pulling in overwhelmingly positive reviews for Thor: Ragnarok, Taiki Waititi is directing the latest film following the Norse god of thunder. Chris Hemsworth is of course set to reprise his titular role, and he will be joined by Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, along with characters we haven’t seen in a while, such as Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif. The Guardians of the Galaxy are set to join Thor in his intergalactic escapades, too.
While plot details are scarce, we have some information. We know that producer Kevin Feige has stated that the movie adapts many elements of the comics, which include introducing Jane Foster back in as Lady Thor. We also know that Thor is slated to battle a new villain named Gorr the God-Butcher, played by Christian Bale, and with a name like that, it’s no surprise that fans are already excited for his appearance.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Nov. 11, 2022)
After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in August 2020, fans were left mourning and wondering where the franchise would go from there. Director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that they will not be recasting T’Challa, which left many speculating as to the plot of the film. Like the other two movies coming out in 2022, details about the film are few and far between. However, actors such as Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Lupita Nyong'o will be returning to reprise their roles as Shuri, M’baku, Okoye, W’kabi and Nakia, respectively.
Along with this, actor Tenoch Huerta has been casted, fueling speculation that the film’s main antagonist will be Namor, an Atlantean-human hybrid with a distinct rivalry with T’Challa in the comics. Furthermore, Dominique Thorne has been cast as Ironheart, a fifteen year old girl named Riri Williams with an iron suit similar to Iron Man’s.
Ms. Marvel (Summer 2022)
This series is set to serve as the origin story for Ms. Marvel. It follows a sixteen year old Pakistani-American girl by the name of Kamala Khan as she discovers that she is Inhuman, a type of alien-human hybrid whose powers are only activated through contact with matter of Terrigen crystals.
The titular Ms. Marvel is set to be played by actress Iman Vellani, with supporting characters including fellow superhero Kareem/Red Dagger and friend Bruno Carelli, played by Aramis Knight and Matt Lintz, respectively.
Moon Knight (2022)
Oscar Isaac is set to make his MCU debut as Marc Spector, a retired marine-turned-mercenary with Dissociative Identity Disorder. However, after being mortally wounded, he is revived by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, who allows him to reconcile his past violent actions by acting as his conduit.
Kevin Feige described it as similar to Indiana Jones but with a twist of mental health discussion. Along with this, Emily Vancamp is slated to make an appearance in the series, reprising her role as Sharon Carter after not being seen since the events of Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
She-Hulk (TBA)
She-Hulk follows Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a young lawyer who develops Hulk-like powers similar to her cousin Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo. Tim Roth is also set to play the Abomination, a scientist who turned into a large humanoid creature with strength similar to the Hulk’s and a rivalry to match. Coupling with this potential for conflict is Titania, a notable rival to She-Hulk in the comics, who is set to be played by Jameela Jamil.
What if…? Season 2 (TBA)
Jeffrey Wright is back as The Watcher in the second season of Marvel’s animated series What If…? Head writer A.C. Bradley has gone on to state that the second season is going to take a different approach from the first. It’s set to focus less on end-of-the-world scenarios and more character driven stories. Rumors have also been swirling about newer characters such as Shang-Chi making appearances in the show, but as of right now, little is known about the series.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (Dec. 2022)
While next to nothing is known about the special, a few details have been shared. The whole cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is set to appear, and it will canonically take place between the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
