Graduate Student Senate: Members to discuss graduate student orientation

During its Tuesday night meeting, Ohio University Graduate Student Senate will vote on one resolution, which would create a new committee.

Members will discuss forming a graduate orientation advisory group, which would plan, organize and carry out orientation for graduate students, according to the resolution.

“The formation of a Graduate Orientation Advisory committee is strongly advised to facilitate a more authentic introduction to graduate student life,” the resolution reads.

The group would be made up of graduate students from various colleges and departments.

At its March 27 meeting, members of the body said they did not want orientation to overwhelm incoming graduate students.

The body will also view a presentation from Chief Marketing Officer Renea Morris from University Communications and Marketing. GSS President Maria Modayil said the presentation will be about UCM’s rebranding effort for the university.

Body members will also discuss the tabled resolution from Dec. 5, which would create an official stance for GSS. Some members believed the resolution would cause tension between the governments of GSS and Student Senate, according to a previous Post report.

“The (general body meetings) are usually the only opportunity to hear from a large group of graduate students together in one place,” Modayil said in an email. “This an opportunity to talk through questions from graduate students.”

Modayil requested that members “facilitate conversations” related to that discussion in a Google doc prior to the meeting. She said that this method would allow GSS to structure its meeting time in order to have time for all questions.
