Having explored the rich and varied connections between science, technology and film, Science on Screen has been presenting various films to multiple theaters across the country.
But for the first time ever on Monday, Science on Screen will be having its first national event, which will be presenting 17 theaters simultaneously, including the Athena Cinema, presenting Soylent Green.
“We wanted to do something fun and something kind of campy, and it just fit the bill,” said Alexandra Kamody, managing director of the Athena Cinema. “We thought it had a pretty good vision of the future, so we wanted to do that and we also wanted to find something that would tie in to our speaker in a rather goofy way.”
Speaking at the event will be Gerri Botte, professor of chemical engineering and the director of the Center for Electrochemical Engineering Research (CEER) at Ohio University.
“My plan is to bring together some of the issues that are addressed in the movie, and allow it to continue a discussion on technology and to have a full discussion with a lively audience,” Botte said.
The national event was created to call attention to the organization, and to allow their mission to be better known throughout the country, said Cheryl White, outreach and publicity assistant for Science on Screen.
“We hope that they get out of these screenings is that they see the amazing work that people in their area are doing, that they see the pervasiveness of science and technology, (and) the interconnectedness between art, entertainment and science,” White said.
In addition to the film, there will also be a 30 minute promo video created by Science on Screen and will be shown before the film.
Although this will be a first time experience for Botte, she said she is looking forward to what the audience will bring along with them and take out of the film to discuss.
“This is different for me,” Botte said. “I’ve done many presentations with many different audiences, as well as being invited to professional meetings, but this is the first time that I am going to be doing an event like this. I don’t know what to expect, the audience will probably be very diverse, but I’m looking forward to the talk.”
Botte and her students will also have a “Farm of the Future” booth set up in the lobby after the screening.
