Ian Wells was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Five Bobcats received All-MAC honors, the Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday morning.
Redshirt senior cornerback Ian Wells was the only Bobcat named to the Second Team. Wells stood out this season for his tight coverage, often matching up against the opponent’s best receiver. Wells recorded 28 tackles, defended 18 passes, in addition to two interceptions.
The rest of the team’s players that recieved recognition were named to the Third Team.
Redshirt senior offensive linemen Mike McQueen and Lucas Powell took two of the possible five offensive line spots. The pair were key components of a strong offensive line that allowed just 26 sacks this season, while paving the way for the No. 46 rushing attack in the nation — the Bobcats gained 2,244 yards on the ground.
Powell is no stranger to being recognized by the conference for his efforts; he was also awarded a spot on the Third Team in 2014.
Junior wide receiver Sebastian Smith also made the Third Team, leading Ohio with 62 receptions for 754 yards and seven touchdowns.
A 6-foot-3-inch receiver, Smith quickly became the quarterback’s top target to be the clear No. 1 receiver to both Derrius Vick and J.D. Sprague.
Smith’s 2015 stats have placed him sixth all time for most receiving yards in a season at Ohio. Also he has tied for second for most receptions in a season of Bobcat football.
The only Ohio player on the Third Team defense was inside linebacker and redshirt sophomore Quentin Poling.
Despite sitting out two games due to injury, Poling finished the regular season with 58 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Around the MAC
It’s no shock as to who took home the MVP on offense: Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson.
Johnson was the best passer in the country this year with 4,465 passing yards. At the end of the MAC Championship Game on Friday, Johnson will most likely hold the record for most passing yards in a single season in MAC history.
Johnson needs just 22 yards to surpass former Miami quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the record.
Akron senior linebacker Jatavis Brown took home the award for best defensive player. Brown helped lead the Zips to their first bowl eligible season in 10 years with 108 tackles, 17.5 of which were tackles for a loss. Brown’s 10.5 sacks tied him for eighth-most in the nation.
