Patterson is running uncontested after an Ohio University student dropped out of the race in the summer.
Mayor: Steve Patterson (D)
Ohio University professors often have duties outside of their normal teaching expectations. For the next Mayor of Athens, that’s governing.
Steve Patterson is running unopposed, but we felt it was important to show our support for the two-term councilman, regardless. During his endorsement interview with The Post, Patterson said he will not be employed by the university during his time as mayor, but that he would be open to returning to OU after his time in office has run its course.
During his interview, Patterson said he is putting his record as an accessible city councilman at the forefront of his campaign. His campaign has been, in part, run by several Ohio University students who worked for the candidate for a class.
The fact that Patterson has direct knowledge about the lives of students and has incorporated them into his campaign adds to the idea that he is committed to helping OU students.
He said he hopes to create many progressive changes to Athens once he is elected, a concept we are very open and excited about. These changes range from attending to the upkeep of local parks and recreation areas as well as improving the Uptown Athens area.
Patterson’s track record shows his engagement with students and we hope he continues that streak when he takes office in January.
