Letter: Gov. Kasich should not sign bill defunding Planned Parenthood

Medical Students for Choice chapters across Ohio are opposed to Gov. Kasich signing a bill that would defund Planned Parenthood.

Medical Students for Choice chapters across Ohio are opposed to defunding Planned Parenthood. This is not about abortion. This is about the health of our communities.

There are state and federal laws already in place that prevent government money from going toward abortion. The defunding bill only affects parts of the non-abortion services that Planned Parenthood offers, including testing for and treating sexually transmitted infections, and birth control, resources for survivors of sexual violence and programs that reduce infant mortality.

Access to health education and affordable contraception lowers the rate of abortions. Why would Gov. Kasich defund the very measures that reduce the number of abortions in Ohio?

If Gov. Kasich signs HB 294, he will be putting our patients, communities and state in a position to have worse health outcomes.

Sincerely, the Medical Students for Choice chapters at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University and University of Toledo College of Medicine.
