Last Wednesday, March 8, marked the notorious Green Beer Day at Ohio University. With a fun excuse to skip class on a weekday, students at OU were eager in search of some emerald beer and a good time.
With some students hitting the bars as early as 11 a.m., it wasn’t long until Court Street became a sea of green. No green attire was out of the question as people showed out in sparkly green hats, four leaf clover sunglasses, green bead necklaces and even face paint.
Lines were quick to form at some of Court Street’s hottest bars like Red Brick, Pawpurrs, The Crystal and The C.I. These bars and more were not only serving green beer, but also a variety of green mixed drinks and cocktails.
For those who were unable to skip class due to midterms, labs or professors that take attendance, there was still plenty of fun to be had and green beer to drink in the evening. Just because the title of the holiday has the word day in it doesn't mean that students weren’t participating well into the night.
Friends Micheala Kramer and Olivia White were two of many students who didn’t let their studies cancel Green Beer Day, solely postpone it.
“No, (we weren’t out during the day), but I heard lots of people were,” said Kramer.
White added the week before Spring Break’s workload required Green Beer Day to be an evening affair.
“I have midterms … I got all my homework done, I got everything done … and then I came out,” said White.
Whether students chose to go out in the morning, afternoon or evening, it seems as though Green Beer Day was a success. After all, green drinks and good music taste and sound the same no matter what time it is.
Another OU student duo, Claire Montogomery and Riley Hester, certainly had a day to remember even though it didn’t start out with a solid plan.
“This was a last minute decision, we were like ‘we’re going out’ and left 10 minutes later,” said Montogomery.
Both girls rated the night a 10/10 and said they had no regrets in their decision of going out. By the looks of a packed Red Brick at 10 p.m. full of singing and dancing students, it appears as though many would have agreed.
Green Beer Day at OU was a prequel to St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on the Friday of Spring Break, on March 17. Since most students will spend their St. Patrick's Day wherever they call home, Green Beer Day offered an entertaining time for students to come together, drink beer and celebrate decked in green.
