Letter: Newspapers need to give more attention to third-party candidates

As the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate in Ohio, I was disappointed after reading your endorsement of Ted Strickland. The problem was not the endorsement itself.

Your reasons for choosing him were clearly laid out and sounded reasonable enough. The problem was that you neglected to even mention to your readers that there were other choices in this election. They may have been very interested to learn that there's a Green running for Senate who believes in: student loan forgiveness; raising the minimum wage to $15/hr; single-payer, universal health care; and above all transitioning to a carbon free economy by 2030 and saving the planet from climate disaster.

Journalists, even opinion page editors, have a duty to inform their readers, as well as persuade them. Most of the mainstream media has studiously ignored the Green Party in this election (which makes the hundreds of thousands of hits on our website all the more remarkable).

I was sorry to see that your paper was no different.

Joe DeMare is the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate for the state of Ohio.
