Flu season is here, and you really should do something about it.
College students are gross.
Hundreds of young adults are packed into dorms. They share shower space, share drinks and even share beds. Conventional wisdom says that can only go on so long until people start getting sick.
Do yourself and everyone else a favor: Get a flu shot. Flu rates seem to be down compared to last year, according to an article we published today, but that doesn’t mean students aren’t bringing any viruses from back home.
And with the end of flu season still months away, there’s still plenty of time for students to get sick.
It’s always when you think you won’t get sick that you do, and infect your loved ones in return.
Doctors — including the Athens City-County Health Commissioner — say getting the flu vaccine is the best way to stay safe this flu season. We agree, especially because you have options in Athens. Campus Care, in addition to CVS and the city-county health department, offers the vaccination.
On-campus, the vaccine will cost $56, billed to your insurance. We know that might seem like a steep price, (it is; OU should offer it for cheaper), but it’s one well worth the peace of mind.
At least one study has shown college students get flu shots at what we consider to be dangerously low levels.
Get the vaccination. Wash your hands. Don’t share cups when you go out on the weekend. The flu might not seem serious, but it can kick you out of class for a few days and result in a campus-wide #SniffleFest. We’re strongly against that.
